The History
1940’s
The Foundation Years
The lot was approximately 7 acres in total originally, consisting of all the land from the road to the lake. The Johnsons are believed to be the original owners of the house, which started out as a modest yellow brick home. The outlines of the original house can be seen on the east side of the building as denoted by the traditional yellow square brick, as well as the lower ceilings/rounded corners in the interior that is typical of 1940’s plaster interiors.
1950’s
A Symbol of Love and Growth
The Johnsons carved out a small lot in the middle of the lot as a wedding gift for their daughter. That house has been modified and added on to, and now exists as the beautiful yellow house along the drive.
1960’s
The Era of Expansion
Donald Bolling and his family, who owned a local business, purchased the house in the early 1960’s from the Johnsons.
1964
Bolling completed significant renovations in 1964. The project included adding an addition to the house, revamping the property’s landscape, and constructing a tennis court and pool. The addition, which mostly consisted of the great room, is on the west side of the house and added the overscale ownings and breezeway helping define the mid-century modern look that the house now retains.

1974
A New Vision Under Duane Quigg
Duane Quigg purchased the house in 1974 from the Bollings for approximately $150,000. Quigg founded Engine Power Components in Grand Haven. Quigg’s acquisition of the property infused new life into the Stuga. Quigg cherishing his time at the house until his passing, at the age of 92 in 2017.
2021
Revival and Restoration
The Bauer family purchased the house in 2021 and undertook an extensive renovation to restore the house and grounds to their former glory. The Stuga consists of all approximately 6 acres that Bolling purchased in the 1960’s, stretching from the water to the street – minus the yellow wedding gift house.
